Make Your Visit Greener

We encourage you to consider the following simple steps to shrink your carbon and environmental footprint when visiting an Ezemvelo protected area

Before you leave home, turn off or lower the setting on your geyser, turn lights off or put them on a timer, and use daylight or motion sensors on outside lights

A Few Logistics

Drive your most efficient vehicle and adjust your driving behaviour to minimise fuel consumption.

Take with you and use your refillable travel mugs and water bottles instead of paying for containers that will be discarded. Avoid single use plastics!

Recycle! Most parks have recycling bins available. You can save many kilograms of carbon dioxide by recycling the waste your holiday generates

When driving in the park, minimise idling of your vehicle when game viewing. Letting a car idle for just 20 seconds burns more fuel than turning it off and on again. By turning off the motor, you will save fuel, reduce noise, reduce wear and tear on your vehicle, and keep the air cleaner

Calculate your carbon footprint. Once you know your carbon footprint, you can track your savings and get involved in programs that allow you to buy carbon credits to offset the carbon emissions from your visit. This is especially important if you are flying to South Africa for your visit

Outside of formal carbon offsets, you can offset the impact of your carbon emissions associated with your holiday by donating to protected area management. Protected areas serve as important stores of carbon, but these stores are at risk because of budget shortfalls

Do not bring firewood with you. Firewood may contain the invasive Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer, which may spread into the protected area with devastating impacts on indigenous trees and the ecosystem. Rather buy firewood at the resort on arrival (phone ahead to check) or bring charcoal
