BIODIVERSITY KNOWLEDGE

Key Habitats of KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal is one of South Africa's most biologically diverse provinces. Its landscapes range from subtropical coastal plains along the Indian Ocean to the alpine peaks of the uKhahlamba Drakensberg, and from dense indigenous forests to expansive savanna and wetland systems. This diversity of habitats supports an extraordinary array of plant and animal life, including many species found nowhere else on Earth.

The province lies within the Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany biodiversity hotspot, one of only 36 such regions globally. It encompasses three UNESCO World Heritage Sites — the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, and Sibudu Cave — and over 130 formally protected areas managed by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.
