The pride of Events in Parks: Parks

Holding Events, Activities and Functions within KZN Wildlife Protected Areas

Anyone who wishes to organise an event, activity or function of any type within any Ezemvelo protected area requires prior written authorisation from the protected area management authority. This is a legal requirement in terms of section 34 of the Regulations for the Proper Administration of Nature Reserves (Published under Government Notice R99 in Government Gazette 35021, dated 8 February 2012. Commencement date: 8 February 2012.) Please note that organised functions, activities or events, may also, but not in all cases, require Event Risk Categorisation in terms of Section 6(3) of the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act No 2 of 2010

Ezemvelo is the appointed management authority for the protected areas under its management. Due to the imperative that a function, activity or event must not negatively impact upon the protected area, its biodiversity and functioning, an application process designed to identify and address potential impacts and regulatory requirements is required for all proposed functions, activities or events

A Few Logistics

The point of contact for anyone wishing to organise an event, activity or function of any type within an Ezemvelo protected area will be the Reserve Manager. He or she will discuss the proposal and alert you to any immediate fatal flaws in the proposal or direct you to the required application process and documents.

Historic and annual events are also required to become legally compliant and must apply for the required Ezemvelo authorisations, together with any other permissions (municipal, traffic, drone/civil aviation, or other Departments where there is a joint mandate on the area under application)

The application process will require the completion of an Environmental Management Plan for the proposed function/event/activity in the very early stages of application. Provided that the function/event/activity is compatible with the protected area and can be fully mitigated, a number of support documents (such as liability cover, other required permissions and safety file, a draft contract, etc.) will be required. A list of the documents likely to be required in the application pack depending upon the function/event/activity’s complexity, size and potential for impact can be viewed HERE (please can a link to the Application Pack pdf be placed here)

Applications (the completed document pack) need to be submitted a minimum of 3 months prior to the proposed event as the approvals process includes a number of committees and takes several months. Please plan an additional month of document development prior to submission as incomplete applications may waste valuable time in the approval process. Any advertising of the event by the organiser prior to approval will be entirely at the organiser’s risk and any such adverts must indicate that approval is still pending until notified in writing of the approval and any conditions of that approval
