CONSERVATION OUTCOMES

State of Biodiversity

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife produces State of Biodiversity Reports as comprehensive assessments of the province's natural heritage. These reports evaluate the current status of ecosystems and species, track changes over time, inform conservation priorities, and support transparency and accountability in biodiversity management.

Each report covers biodiversity status summaries, ecosystem analysis, trends in species populations and habitat condition, threats and pressures facing KZN's biodiversity, and the conservation responses being implemented. In the most recent 2021 report, only 27% of 58 targets across 28 indicators were achieved, with 42% of indicators showing a declining trend — highlighting both the progress made and the urgent challenges that remain.

The reports are available to government agencies, researchers, landowners, educators, and the general public, providing the scientific foundation for evidence-based management, policy development, and awareness-building.
