CONSERVATION LEGACY

The pride of Managing our parks: parks

Managing Our Parks

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife is entrusted with managing KwaZulu-Natal’s network of protected areas, some of South Africa’s most ecologically and culturally significant landscapes. From the misty peaks of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site to the wetlands of iSimangaliso and the grasslands of the Midlands, each protected area plays a vital role in conserving biodiversity, protecting ecosystem services, and preserving our shared natural heritage. We are steadfast in advocating for the harmonious coexistence of nature and humanity, particularly for communities and traditional authorities adjoining our protected areas

A Few Logistics

As the provincial biodiversity authority, Ezemvelo’s role extends far beyond wildlife protection. Managing our parks involves an integrated approach that balances conservation, community, and sustainable use. Our responsibilities include

Biodiversity conservation: Protecting ecosystems, habitats, and species through research, monitoring, and active management interventions

Environmental protection: Preventing habitat loss, managing invasive species, mitigating human–wildlife conflict, and responding to climate change impacts

Cultural heritage preservation: Conserving rock art, archaeological sites, and areas of historical and spiritual significance

Tourism and recreation: Providing visitors with meaningful, sustainable experiences that support conservation and local economic development

Partnerships and community engagement: Working closely with traditional authorities, landowners, and neighbouring communities to promote stewardship and shared benefits

Together, these efforts ensure that KwaZulu-Natal’s protected areas remain healthy, resilient, and beneficial to both people and nature
